Memento
This work imagines a future in which the individuality being erased today remains as a relic. Within a society where “normality” is constructed through averages and standards, the work takes the artist’s body, senses, and traces as material, dismantling and reconstructing them as a collection of symbolic objects.
Made of industrial materials such as metal, concrete, and epoxy, the objects are contained within a large metal box. While the minimal form of the box recalls a standardised, mass-produced product, the objects inside resist being absorbed into a standardised order. Borrowing the forms of tools and devices, these objects do not primarily serve a function but instead reveal primal clues derived from a single human being. In doing so, the work paradoxically evokes the material traces and sensory remnants of humanity that are disappearing within the mechanised city. In this way, the metal box becomes a relic containing human traces that may remain in the future.
